Work Comp Success: The Story of PepsiCo and Age of Injury

Every workplace injury is a unique situation with its own set of circumstances and timeframes. Enter Age of Injury (AOI), a valuable claims management tool that provides much-needed clarity regarding the timing of an injury. In an AOI report, an independent radiologist reviews the diagnostic images and interpretation to determine the specific timeframe of an injury, shedding light on whether the injury may be pre-existing or caused by a workplace incident.

In February of 2020, PepsiCo began having AOI reports completed on injured workers at five plants that reported the most workplace injuries. By incorporating AOI into their claims management process, PepsiCo has been able to compress the workplace injury diagnosis, treatment plan, and return-to-work timeline.
The program has helped the company maintain a 90-day limit on their Transitional Duty program, ultimately returning employees back to work more quickly. Today, the program has been rolled out broadly and AOI reports are completed on all MRI and CT exams for PepsiCo.

“We have significantly reduced the time surrounding when a patient is identified as surgical to the moment they receive the surgery, which means less transitional duty where they're working less. So less financial burden on the injured employee, less financial burden on us as a company, because we're not spending money on unnecessary treatment that won't help the patient. They get to surgery, then they're into rehab six weeks post-surgery and they're back to work. If you look at the significant shrinkage of the time that it took to do that, it's incredible."

“When we initially rolled out Age of Injury, it was really designed as a tool for the claims professional to get line of sight on causation and how to handle next steps on a claim. What PepsiCo did is adopt it holistically – they brought the clinician, examiner, and internal stakeholders at the employer along for the ride – and leveraged it to help with the treatment plan and to help baseline those patients.
It was critically important that this change happened, and it was a new way for us at One Call to think about the benefits this type of offering. I thought it was an amazing shift in the mindset on these types of programs.”
