Telerehab Provides Technology-Based Solutions for Injured Workers

One Call’s telerehab program provides high-quality care, from anywhere, to put injured workers on the fast track to recovery. The following case study demonstrates how virtual visits can provide the same level of care as physical visits, with the added convenience.

The Injury

A 62-year-old male truck driver was involved in an accident in which his truck rolled down an embankment. He suffered from a contusion and abrasion of the left front wall of his thorax, sprained ribs and a fractured right middle finger. Prior to his injury, he lived an active lifestyle and enjoyed golfing and walking.

One Call’s Goal

To ensure the injured worker received the right level of care at the right time by utilizing our comprehensive physical therapy program to get him back to work and back in action.

Telerehab is a virtual physical therapy program accessible to patients at home or at their place of work through a smart phone or an internet-enabled device with a video camera. It can encompass a range of clinical rehabilitation services including:

  • Assessment
  • Monitoring
  • Prevention
  • Intervention
  • Education
  • Consultation

Recommendations & Results

The injured worker was prescribed 12 physical therapy visits.

He was given the choice to attend his appointments at either a traditional brick-and-mortar clinic or virtually through telerehab. He chose the convenience of virtual visits.

One Call’s telerehab program offers injured workers the convenience of attending appointments when it fits into their schedule with appointments available between 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.

After only 2 weeks and 7 visits, the injured worker was feeling 75% better and was able to return to work on a trial basis. Since he was able to customize his appointment schedule while working in a limited capacity (8-10 hour days), he was able to resume his regular 12-14 hour shifts after 3 weeks instead of the 4 weeks originally prescribed.

Targeted intervention by the virtual physical therapist quickly isolated his musculoskeletal issue, leading to swift resolution with 9 visits instead of 12. Three fewer visits equals cost savings for the payer, better return to work outcomes and more time to golf and walk!

One Call’s telerehab program enabled the injured worker to attend his physical therapy appointments from the comfort of home and then continue his appointments without disrupting his work schedule. He also returned to work full-time in less time with fewer visits. It’s a convenient, efficient and cost-effective option. Savings on this case totaled $1,300.
