Navigating the Intersection of Safety and Health

Since March, we’ve had our safety hats on. We’ve taken every step possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to customers, providers, injured workers and our own employees.

We sprang into action to move our entire workforce to work-from-home. We partnered with providers to make virtual solutions, such as telerehab, available to injured workers. We took all our customer meetings online.

It’s been nearly seven months of constant adjustments to ensure safety for all. But have we forgotten something along the way? Have we failed to remember that health and wellness are as important as safety?

Ensuring safety from COVID-19 cannot come at a cost to our health. It’s time to assess the situations created from a world adapting very quickly.

The Work-from-Home Shift, and Its Lingering Side Effects

As employers around the country feverishly transitioned employees to work remotely, ergonomics and wellness probably weren’t high on the list of priorities. Now that we’re well-established in our new routines at home, it’s time to examine how this quick transition may have potential long-term side effects to our health.

With many employees working from home for the first time, it is virtually certain many continue to work from makeshift workstations – perhaps a couch or dining room table, often not an appropriate desk that promotes proper posture.

Over time, lack of knowledge about how to set up a proper workstation can lead to a decrease in performance and productivity, or worse, musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, muscle strains, and lower back injuries, to name a few.

To compound the issue, many of us – especially those with “desk” jobs – are actually getting less exercise than we did when we were in physical office spaces. Our old routines – leaving your desk to attend meetings, grabbing lunch, or heading outside for a quick break with a coworker – are no longer. We didn’t realize it at the time, but these routines added up to important daily steps and movement for our bodies. Instead, many of us are now sitting in the same spot at home all day, with no need to move for hours on end.

We must become more deliberate about our overall wellbeing – and good physical health is the first step toward good mental and emotional health. For example, think about how clear your mind is after a brisk walk. It’s good for your body while also reducing stress, leading to improved mental clarity, and making you a more focused, productive employee.

Staying safe during a pandemic has also caused many to delay healthcare treatment. Some delays have been necessary – such as deferred surgeries – while others are unnecessary when effective, virtual solutions are available.

It’s been inspiring to watch the industry shift to telehealth solutions, such as telerehab (virtual physical therapy), during a time when some traditional brick-and-mortar clinics are closed. Yet, five months into this pandemic, we’re still seeing many injured workers reluctant to try telemedicine solutions to the detriment of their own health.

These solutions have proven to be effective. As an industry, let’s encourage the injured workers we serve to take control of their health, without delay, by utilizing telehealth.
